An die Freiheit: A Concert Celebrating 30 Years of the Fall of the Berlin Wall

Thirty years ago, on November 9th, 1989 the Berlin Wall fell. What was once a symbol of oppression, hatred, and division has now become one of peace, love and brotherhood. In honour of this historic moment we invite you to join us for our Ode to Freedom: ‘An die Freiheit - A Concert Celebrating 30 Years of the Fall of the Berlin Wall’. Performed by four of Calgary’s premier opera singers (Kathleen Morrison, Barbara King, Oliver Munar, Adam Brousseau) and accompanied by Carlos Foggin on piano; the evening will feature art songs, opera arias, duets and ensembles reflecting the emotion and themes of such a landmark moment in our collective history. The evening will culminate in an excerpt from Beethoven’s beloved ‘Ode to Joy’ from his 9th Symphony.

Ever since living and working in Berlin, Germany since 2012, soprano Kathleen Morrison has had a connection to the city. Learning about the living history, hearing the stories of the people who live there, and learning of its storied past was of great interest to her. After participating in the official 25th Anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall in 2014, while performing In Beethoven’s only opera Fidelio, the joy and unity was unlike anything she had felt. Wanting to bring this same emotion and education to her home province was of utmost importance. This concert is the result.

Rocky Mountain High: An Evening of John Denver

Featuring John Denver’s original conductor/arranger Lee Holdridge conducting symphonies across Canada with his original arrangements.  Together with Canadian recording artist Rick Worrall and a Canadian Allstar band with Steve Worrall(Canadian recording artist) , Gary Smyth(guitar), Scott Grant(Drums and Percussion), Brian McMahon(Bass) Chris Stevens(Banjo) Susan Aylard(Fiddle and Violin), Neville Bowman(piano) and Delphine Litke(vocals) this amazing celebration is not to be missed!

Although classified as a “tribute”, unlike most, no one dresses up like John Denver, instead the focus is entirely on the music and with Mr. Holdridge conducting his original scores, and vocalists staying true to John Denver’s style, the night is magic!

As well as John Denver, Lee Holdridge has penned countless scores for both TV shows and motion pictures, and has either written, arranged, or conducted for numerous other respected pop artists, including Barbra Streisand, Brian May of Queen, Stevie Wonder, Al Jarreau, Dionne Warwick, Diana Ross, Natalie Cole, and opera tenor Placido Domingo.   He has won seven Emmy’s and two Grammy’s.   Having Lee Holdridge conduct is more than a special treat, it promises to be a very memorable occasion that will be talked about for years to come.

Building on her "Riveting" (Opera Canada) portrayal of Violetta Valéry, and her wildly successful 10 city concert tour of China, where she sang for a combined 1 million people, Kathleen Morrison returns to her hometown of Calgary, Alberta to present "Viva! Kathleen Morrison in Concert".

Together with longtime collaborator Mimi Park on piano, the pair will present a wide range of operatic selections, and some special treats, that are sure to delight the senses! Also joining the pair will be Calgary favourite Barbara King (Calgary Concert Opera) mezzo-soprano, to treat the audience to a few special duets.

Taking place in Festival Hall, on the heart of Calgary's Music Mile, "Viva! Kathleen Morrison in Concert" is a night not to be missed!
