Trauma and Vocal Injury in Canadian Opera Singers: Challenging Silence, Stigma, and Barriers to Disclosure
I've launched my SSHRC-funded research survey, which forms the foundation of my doctoral research at the University of Calgary on trauma, vocal injury and institutional barriers to disclosure among opera singers in Canada.
This issue is deeply important to me, both as a singer and a researcher. I want to understand where the real challenges are, including the barriers that may prevent singers from speaking openly, seeking help, or receiving appropriate support.
This project will create Canada’s first national dataset examining trauma, vocal injury, disclosure, and professional culture within the opera field.
I’m looking for Canadian opera singers who are active, retired, or emerging, provided they have had at least one paid professional opera engagement. You do not need to have personally experienced vocal injury or trauma to participate.
The survey is COMPLETELY anonymous and takes approximately 15–20 by minutes.
I would be incredibly grateful for your participation, and for your help sharing this with other Canadian opera singers. If you have any questions, please contact me.

Thank you for helping me begin this important conversation.
