"Soprano Kathleen Morrison Riveting as Violetta."
"An die Freiheit:
A Concert Celebrating
30 Years of the
Fall of the Berlin Wall"
Thirty years ago, on November 9th, 1989 the Berlin Wall fell. What was once a symbol of oppression, hatred, and division has now become one of peace, love and brotherhood. In honour of this historic moment we invite you to join us for our Ode to Freedom: ‘An die Freiheit - A Concert Celebrating 30 Years of the Fall of the Berlin Wall’. Performed by four of Calgary’s premier opera singers (Kathleen Morrison, Barbara King, Oliver Munar, Adam Brousseau) and accompanied by Carlos Foggin on piano; the evening will feature art songs, opera arias, duets and ensembles reflecting the emotion and themes of such a landmark moment in our collective history. The evening will culminate in an excerpt from Beethoven’s beloved ‘Ode to Joy’ from his 9th Symphony.
Ever since living and working in Berlin, Germany since 2012, soprano Kathleen Morrison has had a connection to the city. Learning about the living history, hearing the stories of the people who live there, and learning of its storied past was of great interest to her. After participating in the official 25th Anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall in 2014, while performing In Beethoven’s only opera Fidelio, the joy and unity was unlike anything she had felt. Wanting to bring this same emotion and education to her home province was of utmost importance. This concert is the result.
